Senior Safety: Tips for Staying Cool During a Heatwave

Temperatures are rising everywhere this summer. Seniors are more likely to be hospitalized for heat-related illnesses compared to other age groups, so it’s important to know how to stay safe during a heatwave. Here are four safety tips to keep in mind.

Hydration is Key

Drinking water is a must for seniors. Older adults don’t always feel thirsty, which means they become dehydrated more easily. During a heatwave, sweating also causes water loss. Drink plenty of fluids when it is hot. Water is always best, but light juices and teas are also good. Avoid anything with too much sugar in it, such as soda and drinking alcohol. These types of drinks have the exact opposite effect. Eating hydrating foods is also a way to increase fluid intake. Substitute lunch for a smoothie or grab a few slices of watermelon.

Wear Loose Clothing

Overheating is common when it’s hot outside. Avoid it by wearing loose clothing. Wearing clothes that are loose and light will help pull sweat away from the skin. Some fabrics are also made to wick moisture away from the skin. Don’t wear anything too constrictive or dark in color. This can increase feeling hot.

Stay Cool

Staying cool is essential during a heatwave. The CDC recommends not relying on a fan as a sole source for staying cool. Pull down the blinds and close the curtains in the house, and make sure the lighter side is facing outwards. Blinds that have a white backing facing the window will reflect the sun. Closing blinds and curtains can reduce the heat entering the home by up to 45%.

Take it Easy

When it is hot outside, avoid doing any strenuous activities. Take this time to rest and spend time in air-conditioned spaces. In the absence of regular air conditioning at home, explore purchasing a portable air conditioner or a unit with similar features. Take cool showers or baths as a way to cool down.
