In Senior Safety

Home is where the heart is, especially as we grow older. Seniors prefer to age in place because their home is familiar and comfortable. But homes are not set up to accommodate seniors without taking active measures to make it safe. These tips will help make home a much safer place for you or your loved one.

Avoid Falls

Each year, approximately three million seniors are treated in the emergency room for injuries related to a fall, according to data compiled by the CDC. There are several key ways to prevent falls at home:

  • Get rid of any clutter in and around walking paths in the home.
  • Secure cords on the floor against the wall and out of walking paths to prevent tripping.
  • Make sure the edges of rugs and carpets are flat against the floor. Install non-skid backings on rugs and make sure stairs have runners or non-skid material on them.

Make Small But Important Modifications

Rooms like the bathroom tend to present a higher risk for safety concerns. Make important modifications like:

  • Installing non-skid strips in the tub and shower
  • Swap out the toilet seat with one that has a higher profile and a raised seat.
  • Change the shower head to a removable one and add a waterproof chair for safety.

Increase Visibility

Lack of light causes many safety issues. To solve this problem, make sure common outdoor areas near doors, by the mailbox, and by the trash can are well-lit. Install extra lights if necessary. Do the same thing inside by putting nightlights in rooms like the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom.

Other Safety Measures

Set the water heater to a lower temperature to keep it from scalding. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the house. Arrange for someone to come over and help when the detectors go off accidentally. Set up a medical alert system. Many systems provide something for an older adult to wear on them if they fall. But panic buttons should be installed in key places like the bathroom where falls can occur without the button being in reach.
